how to filter lists
when viewing a list how can we sort for all unassigned tasks or combination of unassigned and assigned to me?

Hi Ben, you can click the Filter button above the tasks (funnel icon). Then, on the righthand side, you can see filter options including status and assignee and you can customise your view there.
I also want to mention creating a Dashboard which may become useful. Creating a custom widget or prebuilt widget will give you a quick overview of tasks with the Status and assignees you choose (they're based on the filters you apply).
