Ability to choose level of task that is displayed in a dashboard

We have a custom workflow status that is a "priority" status.  We have a dashboard that finds the "priority" status tasks.  Sometimes, those tasks are sub tasks inside a project (so there are 3-4 levels)  For management, they would like to see highest level task/project or have the ability to choose the level that is displayed of these "priority" tasks.  Right now, the only option is to display the task or the parent task.
