Automation - cancel or change task status after X days with a particular status

I'm not sure if this would fall under a custom workflow or something else. Maybe it's already possible, so please let me know if there's a way to do this already.

I'd like to have something like a time-limited status where a task that has had that status for X days automatically gets cancelled or changed to another status.

For example, I might have a workflow like this:

1. I'm assigned a task from a user and have questions about it

2. I ask my questions and set the status to "waiting on user"

3. If, after X days, the questions haven't been answered and the status is unchanged, and I'd want the status to automatically update to "follow up"

4. Then, if the status has not changed in Y days, cancel the task

Hi Charlie, thanks for your post. It's an interesting idea and we're finding the topic of automation becoming more and more popular so this really adds a lot of value for our Product Team. You might be interested in Lauren's feedback post about Time Tracking Notifications too. Although it doesn't change the Workflow, a notification using Time Tracking may work for you so please vote and comment here if you think this idea may be helpful.

For now, I think the below steps may be a good workaround. Using your example:
1. Ask your question and set the status to "waiting on user".
2. Schedule the task so that the end date is the day you would like to be able to follow up on the task.
3. Create a pre-built, 'Assigned to me', Dashboard widget. See GIF below.

Dashboards are a great place to manage all tasks assigned to you. If the above task goes past the end date you've chosen, then it will show up on the Dashboard widget under the 'Overdue' section prompting you to revisit the task.

Let me know what you think of the this? Again, this is a workaround and we'll be sure to pass your suggestion on to our Product Team, so thank you for sharing!

My organization desperately needs this function! We have tons of tasks that sit in a "Waiting" status which I am constantly having to manually move to "Defer or Cancel". Additionally, many of our onboarding tasks are "waiting" but only for about 1-3 days while our back office processes paperwork, then it becomes New again. I would love to see a way to automate or select a expiration date on certain status'. This post was from 2 years ago... are there any updates?

Hannah Dabbs Mendoza - it's possible to accomplish this today with Wrike Integrate. I posted a full description of how to do this in the Best Practices section, at https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360039423793.

In your case, you might have two different versions of this example process running... one to cancel your waiting tasks in one folder tree (that's what the example I posted does), and another slightly modified to change the status from Waiting to New in a different folder tree.
