[Status: Backburner ⏳] Shorter Job Numbers or shortlinks
The option to display job numbers is helpful (especially for users used to working with other tools like JIRA)
however the numbers are rather long even if you don't have many projects / tasks yet.
I assume wrike uses a global id for all accounts?
It would be very helpful if you could start from zero.
(and use either an internal id just for the account or even better an id for each folder / project)
An alternative would be to generate a shortlink or provide the option to define a unique key for the folder / project which is easy to memorize if needed and which can be entered in the searchbox.
I was also thinking about this too. We are a software dev. company and we know the task/recruitment/incident by the number in our other tool. It would be useful to define the ID of any task as per your needs.
Hi Hani and Jarnail, great to see this idea here! :) @Jarnail are you referring to being able to customize that numeration too, so that it would align with ID's you use elsewhere?
Yes, we use Recruitment (RW), Incidents (IN), Test Case TC)... in our current system. And we use prefix RW, IN, TC for their respective tasks.
e.g RW3452, IN4583 or TC4983
If we have a function in Wrike where we can manually define the numbering of each task, it would make sense and of course help us to tick a box to use Wrike in future :)
Jarnail. thank you for following up! That's definitely some helpful info, thanks for sharing. :)
Hi all,
I'm currently trialling out Wrike, and whilst it's a very valuable product, the job number feature's lack of configuration is a small let down. It would be great to set up parameters like you find on your more agency tasksheet type software with client name is a 3 letter abbreviation, and a 4 to 5 digit job next to it.
For those that may want to use it in an Agile capacity, when going through 'Issues' in Jira, usually the Issue number is regularly referred to when going through a Sprint.
Is this something on the pipeline anytime soon?
Best wishes,
Ikem
Hi Ikem, welcome to Wrike! First off, thank you for getting in touch on the Community. Let me know if there's any way I can help with getting started, I'll be happy to do so :) As for job numbers, we don't have any changed on our nearest roadmap, but it's really helpful to learn about the way you use them and to keep that in mind, so thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts on this.
Hi All:
I am trying to deploy Wrike in my Marketing Group and in the past, we have had 3 and 4 letter descriptions of jobs that come in from different departments and then sequentially numbers for job. I have been doing this manually. Is there anyway to auto generate the sequential numbers at least in Wrike? I do not want to use the task numbers, as our work is all in job folders, not tasks. The folder ID number would not be sequential and is way too long.
Peggy Shea
Hi Peggy, currently there is no way to automatically add custom sequential numbers to Folders and it's not something on our Product Team's roadmap. You have posted this suggestion in the right place and your input will add value to the internal conversations with our Product Team when reviewing this feature in the future - so thank you for sharing here!
I have a similar issue as Margaret. Even our old and outdated system had the ability to auto-generate a Job or Request # sequentially. That is a vital part of successful project managing dozens of projects at once. Being able to easily identify specific projects, so no confusion and track # of projects completed. Having numbers or ability to customize a pre-fix for the business is really important. Hoping our voices are heard and they come up with options for their customers.
We are in the process of transitioning over to Wrike from another job tracking system. I manage an in-house creative team handling over 100+ projects a month and having an ability to autogenerate job numbers would be extremely helpful. I am surprised that this hasn't already been added since the Wrike system over all is very well thought out. If this could be added to the implement soon list that would be wonderful.
We are also considering to start using Wrike to manage our software development (we are already using it for project management). Autogenerated job numbers per project / sprint would be a real value add for us as well as the current ID numbers are too long and not sequential. Other than that the product looks great!
Hi all, just dropping in again to let you know that your votes and use cases are appreciated here and really help with internal discussion around how this might be implemented. If I have any updates from our Product Team on this, I'll be sure to post here, currently, it's not on their roadmap, but they are aware of feedback here so thank you all for sharing.
Hello all,
We definitely need this feature !
Having a shorter job number with a customized prefix by folder (like MKTC0001, or BU0001) would be really helpfull and time saving !
Right now, we are setting up the tree structure and naming system of our production server for the next year. A job number would save us precious time when looking for files or projects.
I'd like to add my voice to the chorus that I would find a custom configuration for a job number assignment would be most useful. Now, I'm having to maintain that info in an Excel spreadsheet. Just a little annoying to have to switch back and forth between the two. Thanks! Karla
We just starting using Wrike. The mentioned functionality to generate taks or job numbers in a custom field would be very valuable. This will help utilizing Wrike for different use cases and scenarios. Therefore I would also like to add my voice to the chorus.
Thanks

This feature is needed!
Agreed ! Plus one for me!
We are trialing Write and other Project Management Software solutions. This is a critical function for us since we use letter prefixes in as part of our own job tracking to denote Business Unit. And these serve as the part numbers on produced assets. Has this been addressed?
@Ken Hi! This isn't something the team is working on at the moment. I can try think of a workaround if you let me know a little more about what your team needs to see. While urls aren't editable, naming conventions within tasks can go a long way. P.S. Let me know if you have any questions during the trial period!
Hi Stephanie, I like the product overall and like the rate of enhancement releases you are doing. But when you think about customizing your software for marketing workflows, a big requirement is part numbers / version control. We deal with lots of marketing assets that can look very similar to one another. That unique part number is critical because we physically add it to the asset we create. A generic DB field ID just doesn't cut it.
For now, I'm going to have to use another solution to generate these...then tag them manually in Wrike. Kind of a pain. Especially when Jira, MS Project, and others already offer something similar.
@Ken Thank you for the additional clarification there. I would love to see what this ends up looking like when it's all set up (if you don't mind sharing).
@stephanie Create a capability that does this, and you'll be a rockstar: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/create-unique-project-ids-for-my-projects-in-project-online-d70422a2-b431-44a7-984c-b62ca1928b61.
For bonus points, make the postfix the Initials (e.g., KP) of the TASK ORIGINATOR.
Here's another example of one of your competitors (C&P) that allows for custom job numbers. Take a look at the first 5 slides in the upper left. You'll see the custom job ID and how used: https://spark.adobe.com/page/zWJMyKwDMjc1X/.
Having used JIRA and a less known program called FogBugz extensively, I half assumed usable ID #s would be available. I was shocked to see how large the numbers are. We are tracking tasks, decisions, and other information via Wrike. It would be huge to be able to have auto-incrementing ids that start at zero. And, I agree, it would be great to have the ability to use text prefixes for the numbers.
My group uses job IDs extensively also. In addition to the requests above -- which would be AWESOME!!! -- I would also like to see an enhancement in the area of search. Right now, when you start typing in characters in the top search box, Wrike will start searching with whatever you've typed. As you type in more characters, the search results narrow down. If it would do this with numbers and the job ID field too, that would be helpful. Basically, if you type in a 4-digit number, it will display any project, folder, task, etc that has that 4-digit number in it somewhere (including in the job ID field). As more numbers are typed, the search results narrow down. Thanks.
Ditto on the absolute need for this feature. Please put this functionality in the product.
Would love to have this feature too!
Hello. This is really very important. Tell me, is this in the immediate plans of the developers?
It will be cool if it will be seen in the screenshot of Ken Paynter
We are trying to find a replacement for Jira. Wrike was the front-runner until I figured out we couldn't customize ID numbers as the current ID numbers are too long. When we have a sprint, all you have to do is say the task ID number and everyone knows the task. It would be pretty hard to memorize Wrike's ID numbers. This is a show stopper.
We were very excited to see all that Wrike can do until we discovered there's no way to automatically create custom job numbers per our industry's specifications. This is a very basic feature that many apps have. Unfortunately it's a deal-breaker for us, and we'll have to pass on Wrike.
