Automatization "complete all sub-tasks when parent task is completed"
Hello Community,
did anyone figure out how to create an automatization that completes all sub-tasks when the parent task is completed?
If could create one that completes the parent task - which is not always useful - but in the other direction it would be a huge help when dealing with larger tasks (with a lot of sub tasks).
Cheers,
Florian
HI!
I believe it is improper to use an automation to mark all subtasks as completed if the parent is completed.
In theory you should complete the subtasks first and then complete the parent.
In any case, a popup appears when you have marked a parent as completed asking if you want to complete the subtasks with the same status.
Hi Pietro,
I totally understand your concerns, maybe I have to specify the use case.
If your parent task is a company that supplies some sort of things, e.g. they have to install light on a Christmas Market. Then this parent task "Light Supplier" might have several sub-tasks like
- ambient lights in trees
- decorative lights on huts
- light for storage area
- ...
Working on computer, the popup appears. Thinking of the app and our use case where you need to work through the list on mobile devices, it would be better to have an option to speed up the process.
Sometime you do not have the time to complete 17 sub tasks on your smartphone. Completing the main task and then geting hit by 17 new tasks in your dashboard, as all sub tasks suddenly appear, is somehow frustrating.
Hope these insights give you an impression, why it might not be completely improper to have a smart solution for this.
Hi Florian,
as far as you write to me, your case is consistent with the request.
I'm just wondering, if the need is to have a list of subtasks but I want to complete only the parent, isn't it better to insert the list as a description of the task?
I imagine you make statistics or reports on the subtasks, but if that's not needed, perhaps using the description could help. =)
Hi Pietro,
thank you for your input. We changed a lot of our subtasks to the description with the checkbox option within the description field so that you can have an overview of "subtasks" marked as "done" and open ones, but no need to hit the box if you are sure that everything is completed and you just want to mark the main task as completed.
So this workaround might be better than the automatization, just needs some time to edit all the tasks in our project to the new style.
Thank you and best regards!
I'm happy to have helped you!
