[From Wrike] Custom Item Types ๐ค Blueprints
Hi Community!ย
Iโm thrilled to let you know that starting today, Custom Item Types work with Blueprints ๐
We know that many of you have been waiting for this release and our team is excited to bring this update to you. Now, the versatility of Custom Item Types is complimented by powering the repeatable work that Blueprints bring you.ย ย
How do they work together?ย
You can create blueprints right from the task- or project-type custom items that are available on the account level. So first, make sure that you already have some account-level custom item types. Please check out this article to learn how to create them ๐
After youโve created a custom item type where you defined which sections to display on the item view, added type-specific custom fields, automation, unique icons, and suggested subitems, you can create a blueprint with it:
- Navigate to Blueprints by clicking the Blueprints button in the right panel on the Home page or selecting Blueprints from the Launchpad.
- Click + Item at the top of the blueprint list.
- Select the relevant account-level custom item type from the drop-down that appears on the right.
- Enter the title of your blueprint. Make the title descriptive enough to be able to find it in the list of blueprints and not confuse it with the title of the original custom item type.
- Add a default description, subitems, and other content to any available custom field or other fields if needed.ย
You have now created a blueprint that users in your account can create work from. The resulting work item will contain all of the content you added while creating a blueprint.
How do you create work from custom-item-type Blueprints?
Now that you have your blueprint powered by a custom item type, you can start creating work! Once you have navigated to the space, folder, or project where you want to create it, you can use one of the following options:ย
- Click the big + button in the upper-right corner of the workspace
- In List view: Click + Item at the top of the items list
- In Table view: Click Item at the bottom of the table
- In Board view: Click + Add item in one of the columns
Now, click the drop-down on the right, and in the search field, enter the title of the relevant custom-item-type blueprint. ๐Please note that at the moment, itโs not possible to add these blueprints to the suggestions menu. After entering the title of your work, click Create or press Enter to finish. Youโre all set!ย
Using custom-item-type Blueprints with Request forms
We know how many of you are using Wrikeโs request forms together with blueprints, and we are happy to tell you that you can now set up your request forms to create tasks and projects out of custom-item-type blueprints ๐ค
We hope that you like this update! Let us know your thoughts and questions below ๐

Hi Lisa,
Is there any plan to bring work templates/blueprints into individual spaces? This is great, but it requires cluttering the account-level custom item types with anything we need to use in Blueprints.ย
My account has quite a few spaces which each have their own request forms and folder in Blueprints for their work templates. If we want to take advantage of custom item types for the majority of our work (which comes in through request forms creating from Blueprints), we have to make account-level custom item types instead of being able to confine them to the space where the request form lives.
Looking forward to exploring this more. I agree with Joshua though as I don't want to have to create a custom item type at the account level if I don't have to. Having this work with space level item types would be nice!
Thanks a lot for your feedback, folks ๐
The team is planning this enhancement for sure, so we'll keep you posted!ย

This is great news, thanks!
definitely looking forward to rolling out custom item types (which in the blueprints will standardize our work)!
I love that this feature has been added to blueprints. Unfortunately, custom item types still aren't quite where we need them to be for our purposes. We heavily use custom fields and the user experience for custom fields within custom items types is less than ideal. The single column approach is awkward, there isn't a logical order to the fields, and I am unable to re-arrange them. In standard tasks and projects, the fields are in an alphanumeric order. This has its own challenges but works much better than the way they appear in custom item types.
I can only agree to the others. Custom item is a good approach, but on the account level it is not very well suited for our needs as we split to different operating sides all over the world with spaces and each side has some differences. So we need them on space level, not to mess up everybody. Teh same is with auotmation rules and request forms. It must become more well-arranged to keep an overview.
I will ditto the others above. Blueprints with the option of being at the account or space level would be great. I haven't created custom item types as we originally created custom fields to accommodate this but will be looking at ways to incorporate even at a high level.
Can you point me to the article that shares how to create a Blueprint? Thanks!

Hi Lisa, could you please confirm that if we start building out the custom item type blueprints at the account level today, we will be able to subsequently migrate everything to the respective individual spaces once the enhancement is released?ย
Hey again, everyone! Huge thanks for all your feedback, it's being reported to the respective team non-stop ๐ค
Melynda Willis It is possible to rearrange the order of custom fields in a custom item type. Please click on this button and try dragging the field to change the order:
Danzel Tay The team is currently researching the approach for this enhancement, so we should be able to let you know more later.ย

Lisa I was able to rearrange those fields but the custom fields we have built out for the different spaces and folders, appear in a seemingly random order after the custom item type is created. I am unable to adjust that order. On both projects and tasks, they appear alphanumerically.ย
Hi Melynda Willis, I see that my colleagues from the Support team reached out to you about this, please let me know if I can help you with anything else.ย
Hi, is there a way to display the icons of the custom item types in table view somehow? It would simplify our use case as we are starting to use them in many cases.
Thanks
Not for the moment MB, I'll be passing on your feedback to the team.ย
Hello,
I have a task related to travelling abroad which requires some formal functionalities - with this task creation I need to make 2 additional tasks which corresponds to the reporting to gov level and some formal internal reporting.ย
I have created a custom item type for travel and created 2 subtasks for 2 different people (they need to report to gov and internally). This part works good.ย
Now the hard part. Travel type need to be assigned to the person travelling - for example a 3 week trip.
But I would need to populate the subtasks with some data from this custom item type. Is it possible?
So for example a subtask - report to gov will get the Name of assignee, dates from ... to and for example a country?
It would simplyfy a lot as the tasks are assigned to different office workers and we need to be sure that the procedure is done before starting the trips.
ย
I hope there is a solution on this one. Thanks in advance.
Hey MB ๐ I can see my colleague from the Support team has reached out to you by email ๐ Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!ย

+1 from our side on leveraging Bluerints at the Space level.ย We share an instance and can't create Blueprints at the account level.ย ย
Any idea when to expect this?ย Our team is new to Wrike and are in the midst of a large configuration effort.ย ADVthanksANCE.
Thanks for reaching out Fred Lunau ๐ This is planned but we don't have ETA yet. We'll keep you posted!ย

Hiya, New to Wrike so please forgive me if this has been covered.
Ive created custom item types and ive just learned that you need to create blueprints from those custom item types in order for them to prepopulate fields.
Then when i go to add that to my table view it only lets me select the custom item type from the quick access menu? For me i woudl ALWAYS want to use the blueprint version. Never the version without the prefilled defaults in the fields. But the only way to do this is to type the name of the blueprint? And then i have to tick extra boxes to create the item from the popout?ย
For my team would be MUCH better if 1/ you could roll custom item types and blueprints into a single feature. I cant see a need to have these as seperate. 2/ allow blueprints to be in the quick access menu. 3/ no extra popout for create frpm blueprint. Just create it as easily as create from custom item.
IF I'm totally not getting it, could someone from Wrike reach out and help? Thanks so much. Feel like I'm losing my mind a little bit. Thanks!
Hi Faye Adams, welcome to the Community! Thank you for sharing your use case with us, I understand why it would be beneficial for you and your team to access your custom item type blueprints in a more direct way - or predefine values in your custom item types.ย
I've passed your feedback on to our Product Team and we will keep you updated if any changes are implemented. Please let us know if you have any additional questions about this or other features.
Lastly, please allow me to mention that you can visit our New to Community forum to get the most out of your experience with our Community ๐
Hello, is it possible to trigger custom item types to automate with pre-load standard subtasks? I have been trying to link creating a custom item type to triggering a blueprint with subtasks.
Hi Daniel Coonan, apologies for the late reply! I've now asked our Support team to help you with this question; please feel free to post the solution here after you speak with them ๐
