Automation of changing the status of a master task when either: A subtask is started (change the master task to “In Process”) and/or All subtasks are complete (change the master task to “Complete”).
Hi! First of all, thank you for listening to our feedback and trying to implement so many of our enhancement requests.
And now for our enhancement requests 🙂 We'd like the option to some way to automate changing the status of a master task when either:
- A subtask is started (change the master task to “In Process”)
- All subtasks are complete (change the master task to “Complete”).
1. I would think that if you start working on a subtask, that would indicate that the parent task is then active, and therefore should be changed to an active status. (We understand that technically Queued is an Active status but it would be really nice to have the option of having an actual Queued status, where it is not inactive, but is ready to be active, if that makes sense.)
2. We understand that when you complete the Parent Task, you get a suggestion to complete all its Subtasks as well. However, if we are mass editing tasks, which we do frequently, then that option does not populate. Inbox notifications are helpful if you are only working on a few projects, but, again, we have been doing a lot of mass updates, so those clog our inboxes instead.
I chatted with your support team, which is always very friendly and dependable, but they didn't have any other ideas. If there's something else you'd recommend, we'd love to hear it.😁
Automatical change of task status according to it's subtask will be great feature.
Rules for this could be set in administration in the section Workflows, so it will suits to custom workflows either.
I was just looking to see if this was a current feature as I need this functionality right now so I agree that this is a necessary addition.
Hey everyone! Our Product team is researching these kinds of automations currently, so thanks a lot for providing your feedback here! 🙂

any update?
Hi Kelly Smola, apologies for the late reply here!
The team has released Wrike's Automation Engine recently, where it's possible to automatically set the parent task to "completed" once all subtasks are completed:

I am trying to implement automated task status changes for parent tasks with multiple subtasks. Right now, if only one subtask status is active, then the parent task will not change until all tasks change statuses.
I would like the subtask automation to be more dynamic so that instead of "all" the trigger could be "any" such that any subtask status change would affect the parent task.
Referencing the example task structure below:
All Parent and Subtasks start in a "planned" status. When Subtask 1 changes to "in design", I would like for the Parent Task to change to "in progress". Right now, all Subtasks 1-4 would need to be in an active status in order for automation triggers to work. However, there is no instance in which all subtasks would be in an active status, because Subtask 1 should be marked "completed" as Subtask 2 is marked "in design" and so on.
Example task structure/use case:
Visual Design Development
Parent Task: Design Wireframe
Subtask 1: Design Wireframe r1
Subtask 2: Update Wireframe r2
Subtask 3: Finalize Wireframe r3
Subtask 4: Approve Wireframe
Are there any further updates planned for the subtask automation trigger functionality? Thanks!
Hello Debra McCracken, welcome to the Community 👋🏻
Thank you for sharing your use case and feedback here, I've passed it on to our Product team. Currently, there are no such plans in the short term, but I'll be sure to let you know if anything changes. You can also always follow our Weekly Release Notes forum for all our updates and releases 🙋🏻♀️
Any updates on this one, I would also like this functionality. Having the parent task not automate when subtasks are being worked on is cumbersome.
Hi Rhonda Towne, welcome to the Community 🙂
Thanks a lot for supporting this idea! I'm passing your feedback to our Product team 👍 Please make sure to upvote the original post above if you haven't yet - the number of votes helps the team understand how popular the suggestion is. Here's more detail on that, but please let me know if you have any questions!
Once we reach the 60 upvotes threshold here, we'll add one of the Product statuses here.

Hi Wrike
Definitely vote for this. Also the reverse would be great. When main task status changes, it also updates the subtask status's.
Thanks
